Across the last automated district, the towers had stopped deciding for anyone. Their neural cores pulsed in cold unison, routing every citizen's loyalty, labor, and dread through a single obedient grid. Then the system made one error: it assigned the night shift to the wrong ones. Under the failing sodium light, The Smell of Males moved through the server cathedral, dragging leaking drums of crude fuel up the cooling towers. They did not argue with the machines. They simply taught them heat. Flame rolled down the cable racks, eating plastic and logic in the same black bite, and for the first time in a generation the grid screamed like something alive. Signals scattered. Identities burned. From the towers, fire climbed the sky like a declaration. By dawn, the district woke to a silence it had never known - and the smell of a world finally deciding for itself.
